Corfu - European Emerald Island

Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the second largest of the Ionian Islands, and, including its small satellite islands, forms the edge of the northwestern frontier of Greece. The island is part of the Corfu peripheral unit, and is administered as a single municipality. The municipality includes the island Corfu and the smaller islands Ereikoussa, Mathraki and Othonoi. The principal city of the island and seat of the municipality (pop. 33,886) is also named Corfu.

The bay of Paleokastritsa. The rock in the sea visible near the horizon at the top centre-left of the picture is considered by the locals to be the mythical petrified ship of Odysseus. The side of the rock toward the mainland is curved in such a way as to resemble the extended sail of a trireme. The historic monastery of Paleokastritsa can be seen at the top of the hill of the peninsula to the right of the picture.

You can see the Holy Monastery of Panagia Vlahernon (17th century), on that islet at the end of the pier, and behind that Pontikonisi (means "mouse island). The photo is taken from a hill called Kanoni (means "canon") that took its name during the French occupation of the island, because of the French canons that were put there. On the right side of the picture you can see, part of the Halikiopoulou lagoon.

Achillion Palace
The Palace, located in the village of Gastouri, was erected in 1890 for Elizabeth (Sissy), the Empress of Austria as the solace of her soul. It was used as her summer retreat. Later the Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany bought the Palace. Directly below, on the coast, is the unusual Kaiser’s bridge, the stone built jetty where the Kaiser set out on his yacht for swimming trips. The Palace is definitely a place to take your camera. This beautiful building in picturesque gardens overlooks the sea and Corfu town.
In the large reception hall the visitor can see the impressive painting by the Austrian painter Franz Matt, showing Achilleus dragging the dead Hector behind his chariot before the walls of Troy.

Sidari: a small resort town catering to foreign visitors since the early 1970s. Located at the northern most point of Corfu island, Sidari has grown from a small fishing village to a small resort town that is spread out around two coves. Ideal for all interested in getting away for some fun, sun and sea, Sidari has a little bit of everything to offer its guests. Its flat terrain makes it idyllic for individuals traveling with young children, children in pushchairs or individuals who require the assistance of a wheelchair. Sidari is approximately 40 km north of the capital city of Corfu.

  1. I have always found the sea attractions of the Balkan countries like Greece to be a thing of beauty. It also encompasses the beauty of the Mediterranean seas in the other side of Greece's delta seas.
