It is estimated that only 130 palm species grow naturally beyond the tropics, mostly in the subtropics. Chamaerops is the only palm species native to continental Europe. It is mainly found in southwestern Europe (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Malta) and northwest Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia). It is the northernmost naturally occurring palm in the world, with the northernmost localities at Hyères-les-Palmiers, on the Mediterranean coast of southern France, at 43° 07' N, and on the island of Capraia off the Italian coast, at 43° 04' N. Google Map

Lukunsky grove is the northernmost forest extension in the world. Ary-Mas to the west from Lukunsky grove is the northernmost isolated forest island, though located approximately 6 kilometres more to the south. The only tree-form species of Lukunsky grove is Dahurian larch, but in total there are 268 species of plants, 78 species of birds, and 16 species of mammals. The species composition shows that Lukunsky grove is rather a part of taiga and not tundra. Separate Dahurian larch trees grow up to 5 - 7 metres tall. The Lukunsky grove forms a northern part of wider forest massif extending for hundreds of kilometres to the south.  Google map

Barneo Ice Camp  photo source
Camp Barneo is an ice base annually established on an ice floe relatively close to the North Pole. The first "Barneo" ice base was established in 2002. The ice base is sponsored by the Russian Geographic Society and normally lasts for the month of April. Depending on the base's location, excursions to the actual North Pole can be conducted on skis, by dog sled, or by helicopter. In 2007 Barneo was located at about 89°31.5′N 30°27′W. However, northerly winds cause the camp to drift toward the southeast at a speed of 0.8 km/h. Beginning in 2008, "Barneo" has become a better known unique tourist destination. Because of the constant moving ice on the Arctic Ocean, Barneo has to be rebuilt from scratch each year. Barneo is not merely a tent camp; a flown-in bulldozer was used to flatten the snow so cargo planes can land. Another runway is being built.

Ny-Ålesund is one of the four permanent settlements on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago. It is located on the Brøgger peninsula at Kongsfjorden. Like the rest of Svalbard, Ny-Ålesund is administered by the Kingdom of Norway. Ny-Ålesund is one of the world's northernmost settlements at 78°55′N 11°56′E, and is the world's northernmost functional public settlement. Today, it is inhabited by a permanent population of approximately 30-35 persons. All of them work for one of the research stations - e.g. the Norwegian Polar Institute - or the logistics and supply company "Kings Bay AS", which 'owns' and runs the research village. In the summer the activity in Ny-Ålesund is greatly increased with up to 120 researchers, technicians, and field assistants. At present, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, France, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea and China all maintain research stations at Ny-Ålesund, although not all are inhabited year-round.
