12 of the Most Beautiful Lakes in the World

Nature and it’s beauty have always attracted mankind. Nature not only soothes the eyes but also put the body and the soul at solace and comfort. Lakes are God’s gift for us. They have an ability to take us to peace and tranquility in the hustle bustle of present day’s busy life. Take some time out and savour the depth, clarity, reflection and beauty of these lakes.

1. Peyto Lake, Canada
Peyto Lake in Canada is probably one of the most photographed lakes in the world. It is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway. This lake got its name from Bill Peyton, an early 20th Century explorer who explored the Canadian Rockies during the days of Canada’s western expansion.

During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. 2. Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

The stunning Plitvice Lakes National Park lies in the Lika region of Croatia. The park is surrounded by the mountains Plješevica, Mala Kapela, and Medveđak, which are part of the Dinaric Alps. The 16 blue-green Plitvice Lakes, which are separated by natural dams of travertine, are situated on the Plitvice plateau. Waterfalls connect the lakes, and the tallest waterfall is Veliki Slap at 70 meters (230 feet) tall.

The Plitvice lakes area boasts a large variety of interesting and colorful flora and fauna. Visitors can enjoy walking and hiking the many pathways and trails, or exploring the lakes by boat. 3. Moraine Lake, Canada

The beautiful blue colored Moraine lake is glacially fed and is situated in the valley of ten peaks near the town of Lake Louise in Banff National park of Canada. The lake has a surface area of 0.5 sq km (0.19 sq mi). The top attraction of the lake is its blue colored water that reflects the ten huge Canadian peaks in it making  it one of the most beautiful places of Canada.

This most photographed location of Canada is a little heaven on Earth. The area around the lake has several walking/hiking trails which are, from time to time, restricted because of grizzly bear activity. Google map

4. Crater Lake, USA

Crater Lake is one of the most scenic lakes in United States and is famous for its amazing clear and deep blue water. The lake is surrounded by cliffs and striking islands. Located in the south-central region of Oregon, the lake is a part of and the main feature of Crater Lake national Park

5. Five-Flower Lake, China

The pristine water of Wuhua Hai, or Five-Flower Lake, is the pride of Jiuzhaigon National Park in China. This lake contains such auspicious colors of nature, such flourishing flowers and trees of various kinds that it gives a multi-colored exquisite grandeur. This is why the lake is also called the ‘five-flower lake’. The water actually consists of carbonate as well as hydrophytes which is why when the rays of sun combine with the water along with reflective colors of scenery around it, the lake beams with a vesicular sight of a bizarre color combination.

The lake displays all sorts of colors but the main to be sighted are blue, dark green, pinkish red, even goose feather yellow and light yellow, etc. This lake is actually one of the dozen natural lakes. It is quite shallow, and its bottom, which is as clearly visible as through clear glass, is littered with fallen tree trunks. The water of this lake never freezes and never dries up. 

6. Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled is located in Slovenia in the region of  Upper Carniola. It takes it’s name after the Bled castle. The lake finds it’s beauty in the reflection of the marvelously beautiful castle standing magnificently on a rock overlooking the lake. It is a well known tourist attraction because of it’s mystic and royal appearance and cultural rooting of the castle.

It is a famous spot for tourists, painters, and sportsmen. It offers sports activities like golf, boating, rowing, fishing, horse riding and trekking. Bled hosts the World’s Rowing Championships. The island on the lake has 99 steps and a beautiful and touching tradition is that groom carries his bride up these steps on their wedding day. Google map

7. Lake Hallstatt, Austria

Lake Hallstatt or Hallstätter See is a lake in the Salzkammergut, Austria. Its surface is approximately 8,55 sq km (3.3 sq mi) and its maximum depth is 125 metres (410 ft). Town of Hallstatt and its population of less than 1000 residents rest on the southwestern shore of the Hallstätter See.

In addition to the picturesque view of the town on the lake, tourists can see the world’s first salt mine, enjoy nearby skiing, take a trip to the World Heritage Museum, and visit the Dachstein ice cave. 8. Yucatan Cave Lake, Mexico

Yucatan Cave Lake is yet another masterpiece of nature. The lake is considered forbidden though, but the lake itself is so beautiful, one can hardly resist the sight. It is found in Mexico, in the basement of Tiger Che in Yucatan peninsula. The lake consists of various caves in and around it, and they are the real amazing and delightful sight. One can hear deep and beautiful musical instrumental sounds, more like the sounds of bells, if any flat place there is struck hard with a fist.

There is a lot more to be discovered there actually. You will find underground spaces, dry riverbeds, beautiful glittering stalagmites which look like frozen fountains, flat terrace of limestone and so much more. The whole rocks are of limestone landscapes which are common in Yucatan. All in all, Yucatan Cave Lake is a sensational sight and worth discovering. From its waters to the caves it is simply amazing!

10. Garibaldi Lake, Canada

Garibaldi Lake is a turquoise-coloured alpine lake in British Columbia, Canada, located 37 km (23 mi) north of Squamish and 19 km (12 mi) south of Whistler. The lake lies within Garibaldi Provincial Park, which features mountains, glaciers, trails, forests, flowers, meadows, waterfalls. The park is a wildlife protected area. The trails in the area are promoted as being among the most beautiful on Earth.

During the summer, access to the eastern end of the lake is severely limited, since no trails have been constructed along the steep and unstable slopes which plunge directly into the lake. During winter, the lake is typically frozen from late December to late April, allowing backcountry skiers and snowshoers to easily reach the far shore. A pair of small alpine huts are located in Sphinx Bay on the eastern shore and Sentinel Bay at the southeastern tip of the lake. Google map

Lake Como is a lake in Lombardy, Italy. It is fed by melting glaciers. This lake is the third largest and the most beautiful lake in Italy and one of the deepest lakes in Europe with a depth of 400 m (1,300 ft). The beauty and mild climate of Lake Como has always inspired the nobility and the wealthy to built stunning villas with beautiful gardens since Roman times. There are also many charming medieval villages nestled on the shores.

12. Lake Pahoe, Chile
Lake Pehoé is a surface water body located in Torres del Paine National Park, in the Magallanes Region of southern Chile. The lake is fed mainly by Paine River, but it also receives the waters of the outlet of Skottsberg Lake.
